My name is Bobby, and I’m a Gabaldon addict.
I regularly re-read the Outlander series, working my way through one after the other, thousands of pages, as entranced as I was the first time I discovered them. I read when I should be sleeping, and then dream about Claire and Jamie, about Brianna and Roger. I’ve already pre-ordered the new one, Written In My Own Heart’s Blood. I’m terrified that Gabaldon will decide Jamie has to die, or Claire. I need an intervention.
I’ve tried to analyze what it is about the Outlander series that I find so compelling, and besides the fantastic plotting and writing, I think it’s the secret aspect. Claire’s secret is that she is a time traveler. Jamie and the other characters all have any number of secrets. Books with secrets are my secret addiction.
Let’s see, there’s Gone With The Wind–Scarlett’s secretly in love with Ashley Wilkes.
There’s The Secret Garden, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Great Expectations with the secret benefactor, Jane Eyre, with Rocheters secret wife, Harry Potter, with layers of secrets, and of course, The Secret. And my second favorite genre after romance, mystery novels, with all their gory delicious secrets. Maybe I’m just addicted to secrets?
Am I on my own here, or do books with secrets have you addicted? Which ones?
And if not, could you arrange an intervention for me?
